Rev. Ellen Cooper-Davis
"The Seventh Principle: The Empty Center"
Throughout the ages, religion has postulated a universe that posits humankind as its crowning achievement. But what if it's not all about the humans? Unitarian Universalist theology offers another vision.

"What Does MLK’s Legacy Say To Us Today?"
Martin Luther King Jr. continues to be a great hero to many people. During his lifetime he was instrumental in achieving racial desegregation, the Civil Rights Bill, and the Voting Rights Bill. Yet racism continues to be strong in our country with the severe economic inequities affecting African Americans and other people of color disproportionately. This suggests much of King’s dream of a Beloved Community still lies well beyond our grasp. Why has white racism been so difficult to eradicate? What does the lack of fulfillment of King’s dream say to us Religious Liberals at this time in our country’s history? These and other questions regarding King’s Legacy will be explored today.

"And Who Is My Neighbor?"
Unitarian Universalists like good questions, possibly even more than good answers. Most people in North American culture are familiar with Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan. What many people forget is the question that prompted Jesus to tell the parable. The question was “And who is my neighbor?” This question from nearly 2000 years ago is still a good one. As begin this New Year we will consider in this seemingly well connected world, what does the idea of neighbor mean to us today as individuals and as a Liberal Religious community in San Marcos.

"The Divinity of Santa"
The commercial exploitation and myth creation around Christmas can be a cause for cynicism, but what if we could engage even the commercial aspects of Christmas to find deeper religious meaning. This worship explores this and other seemingly non-religious aspects of Christmas. Also includes Brian's Words For All Ages, his reading of “Christ Climbed Down” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Amber Walter reads an excerpt from “The Tablet 2” by G.K. Chesterton, and offers her Reflection on what Christmas means to her.

"Does Religion Have a Future?"
In Europe, organized religion and its influence has declined rapidly in the last 50 years. Today, in the U.S. mainline Protestant and Catholic religions are also in decline, yet some religious groups are growing rapidly here, and Christianity is growing rapidly in Africa, India, China, and other parts of Southeast Asia. How does globalization affect religion, what does the Religion of the future look like, and what does this mean specifically for Unitarian Universalism here in the United States? The service also includes Brian's favorite book for Words For All Ages, Steve Wallace's reflection on what the congregation has meant to him, and his reading of an excerpt from“The Future of Faith” by Harvey Cox.

“Are We a Shadow People?”
We think of our shadow side as internal, but in nature a shadow is active and external: it is what is created when we block the light. As the days shorten and this year nears completion, let us examine our own impact, and how in our lives and communities we can choose to be bringers of light. Includes Mary K's Words For All Ages and her son Will Bryant's offertory music.

“Will There Be Mimes?”
There has been much dialogue within our congregations and within our movement about working to become a more multicultural, multiethnic faith. Includes Mari's Words For All Ages, and "Reckless Borrowing or Appropriate Cultural Sharing?" by Revs. Jackie Clement & Alison Cornish read by layleader Lee Bricker, and Mari reading of the poignant “Mattering," from "Building the World We Dream About,"by Rev. "Spirit of Life, Come Unto Me"
The "Hymn Spirit of Life" is a hymn we sing almost every Sunday in our worship service immediately after Joys and Concerns. Familiarity may not breed contempt but can cause us to miss the powerful sentiments expressed in the words of this hymn? Spirit of life, come unto me – is the opening and closing line of the hymn. What are we asking for here when we sing this? Also includes Brian's Words for All Ages, Steve Wallace's Reflection on life, and his reading from "A Meditation on Leftovers" by Rev. Gordon McKeeman.

"You Reap What You Sow"
As people of faith, we seek to take responsibility for our actions, including our wrongful words or deeds. Sometimes, though, it seems like we have to reap what other people sow, too. The idea of the interconnected web suggests that everything that happens everywhere affects us all. Are these at odds? The field of wheat and weeds beckons us ... we wade in to see what truth we can find.

"Falwell Did Not Speak for Us: How the Loudest Christian Voices have Misrepresented the Christian Message" download the manuscript
The story of the Christian Church has been one fraught with patriarchy, bigotry, and stubborn anti-intellectualism, one of exclusion over inclusion, and one favoring abuse over empowerment. Christian hope is not all about accepting Christ in order to avoid eternal damnation --- it's a hope that God is with us in our struggle against injustice in this world.

What does the most influential Unitarian Universalist thinker of the 20th Century, James Luther Adams and the Story of David and Goliath have in common? The answer is five smooth stones. Satisfied? Probably not. To better understand this answer, we explore what James Luther Adams believed to be the five vital defining characteristics of Liberal Religion and how they might be helpful to Liberal Religious thinking today. Includes Brian's Words For All Ages about David and Goliath.

"Thorns in Paradise"
“Every rose has its thorns,” and sometimes we just wish it didn’t. A rose’s thorns aren’t just inconvenient, though. They protect the rose, and also create change in those approaching the rose by making them take more care in their efforts. What are the roses -- the things we most want to reach -- in our inner lives? Peace? Joy? What thorns are in the way? Thorns are an expected, natural, necessary, and beneficial presence for the rose. Can we learn to see life’s thorns in the same way?

Summer is claimed as a time of relaxation, but the disruption to our usual schedule and traveling for vacation does not always feel relaxing - often feeling even busier than usual. "Actions Speak Louder Than Words"
This common expression is often used to highlight disparities between what someone says or teaches and what they actually do. Today, we will consider this expression from another angle, exploring with the wife of the Baal Shem Tov, Hasidic master, and the Israelites at the foot of Mt. Sinai, how sometimes we are called to act without having perfect understanding or a detailed plan. How do we know when to wait, and when to act?

“Immigration – Undocumented, Illegal, or Something Else”
The status and rights of immigrants who entered the United States without the appropriate government paperwork is one of most emotional and divisive issues in our society. The media through the internet and television has a profound influence on our culture. The most popular television shows both reflect and help define our values as a society. What does it say about religious values? Also included are Amber Walter's reflection on her love of media, and reading from Mark Pinsky's "The Gospel According to the Simpsons."

“The Torch Be Ours to Hold It High”
Memorial Day traditionally is a day of patriotic fervor, a time of solemn respect and reverence for this country, our home. When it began in 1868, almost immediately after the Civil War, Decoration Day called on Americans to decorate the graves of all those who had fallen in battle, whether Union or Confederate. The sectarian realities of today's world, and of America as a global power, run deep. Is our spiritual determination strong enough to transcend national boundaries, and, in the spirit of Memorial Day as it was created, honor all those who have died for what they believed in?

"Receiving With Grace and Gratitude"
In our religious communities we often talk about thinking of others and giving to others. What about receiving from others? And perhaps the even more difficult task of asking for help from others. Life often offers us gifts – sometimes sought after, sometime not. In Unitarian Universalism with our emphasis on our individual freedom, we need to remind ourselves about asking and receiving the help for others. This worship service will explore the religious act of receiving the gifts that life offers us and how we can respond with grace and gratitude.
